Dr. Casanas & Rene visit El Salvador
Dr. Casanas joined his favorite non-profit organization once again to make a difference where it counts. His trip was to Concepcion de Ataco, Ahuchapan, El Salvador and joining him was our very own Rene Herera, a native of the country. The two were members of a team which consisted of an Opthomologist, Pharmacist, 2 Nurses, and a number of medical assistants. Their mission was to bring healthcare to the local people over a 3 day period. During their time there, they were able to give over 700 people the gift of smile, sight, and medicine. The organization also donated a house and furnishings to a lovely family who desperately needed it. Dr. Casanas, Rene and the team all helped move the family into their new home. Both Dr Casanas and Rene have described this mission as being a blessing. They returned to TDC humbly, with great appreciation and respect for the people of Concepcion de Ataco. They are now awaiting their next mission.
February is Dental Health Month
Each year the talented hygienists and assistants at TDC take some time to go into the local schools and educate our children on proper oral hygiene and good oral habits. The program also reviews healthy food choices and what to expect when you visit the dentist. We currently are involved with 3 school districts grades K-6. Over the years the program has developed into quite a positive influence and is truly enjoyed by staff, teachers and students alike. For more information, or to register your school for our Dental Hygiene Program please contact Liz Jermyn 631-924-8155 ext 30. Please be aware we will need at least 30 days notice for scheduling. Additionally, we have extended the program into the month of March due to the overwhelming amount of requests.
“Longwood Kids”
For over 20 years Total Dental Care has been giving back to the community where it counts… our kids! Each month one student from the Longwood School District http://www.longwood.k12.ny.us is selected by the school nurse to receive FREE dental care. The student chosen must have no dental insurance and must be in great need of dental treatment. Over the years Total Dental Care has been able to restore many children’s mouths to a healthy state. Many of these children have continued here as patients for many years, and have beautiful, healthy smiles that they are happy to show to the world. To most of these kids there is nothing worse than having low self esteem and being embarrassed or uncomfortable in school or in public. Growing up is hard enough, but then add a flaw or defect that you wish you could fix but have no control to do so, it’s very disheartening. It is amazing to see the transformation of children are given the simple gift of a smile - they are grateful forever! To find out more about our “Longwood Kids” or if you know of a school or group in need of assistance, please call Liz 631.924.8155 ext.30
“Dr. Casanas goes to Honduras”
Dr. Miguel Casanas has been with Total Dental Care for 10 years. He has always done his part to give back to the community and recently went to San Pedro Sula, Honduras with a non-profit organization. Dr. Casanas was fortunate enough to be apart of an amazing team of volunteers. Among them were Dr. Dee, a dentist from Oklahoma, Shannon, a Dental Hygienist from Colorado, 2 eye doctors and 3 nurses. The team set up a makeshift clinic in a high school in a town called Rio Lindo, which is in the mountains of Honduras. Over 1400 people in need of dental care were treated in 3 days time. Both adults and children stood in line for hours awaiting there dental extractions. Supplies were limited and the team had to be very resourceful, using plastic spoons as dental retractors and flashlights for a better view. Patients were numbed and treated, then it was the next persons turn. There was an area set up in the courtyard of the school used to entertain children and educated them on dental health. Dr. Casanas describes his trip as “life changing” and “eye opening”. “They are such beautiful, strong people, so kind and thankful. It was terrible to see the conditions of their mouths. A few times I had try my best to compose myself, it was just heart wrenching”. We at Total Dental Care are very proud of Dr. Casanas and the other volunteers, and we hope this story inspires more people to lend a helping hand to those in need.
“Mattituck Strawberry Festival”
Total Dental Care proudly attended the “2010 Mattituck Lions Strawberry Festival” (June 18-June 20). Mary Jean Carro, a dental hygienist whose been with Total Dental Care for 17 years, along with some of our other wonderful staff spent the weekend handing out information and education people on dental health. The Festival was a great success! We gave away over 5,000 TDC Discount Family Plans (1 YEAR FREE) to people who had no dental insurance and needed a dentist. This is what we consider to be a great accomplishment! That is 5,000 people in our community who now have the opportunity to receive free cleanings, exams and xrays, and dental treatment at a reduced rate!
In addition, we had free raffles, prizes and lots of free goodies!
